Welcome to project 5ht

  • I am RedBeardRunning, a web developer and an ultra trail running enthusiast who uses running to maintain my physical and mental health. In 2017 I had gotten tired of all the constant injuries, rapid weight loss and fatigue. My Physio recommend that I start monitoring my training load with the Chronic Load Ratio formula. I kept this up for 80 weeks but it is near impossible to maintain all that data in an excel spreadsheet and therefore stopped. Without this oversight of my workload, 2019 became a year of fighting frustration from the same work load based issues. This resulted in me finally getting around to creating an application to do the work for us.

What is Chronic Load Ratio (CLR)?

  • The chronic load ratio is the ratio between short-term(Acute) and long-term(Chronic) work load. Long-term workload is a longer period of time (for example: a month) and short-term workload is a shorter period (for example: a week).
  • Why do we want to measure this? When we train we have all have reasons as to why we do this. Sometimes it is for a race, sometimes just for personal fitness or even mental health. What we try to do as competitive or recreational athletes is maintain the right balanced work load to avoid undertraining or overtraining. Did you know that undertraining can carry the same injury risks as overtraining? The "rest day" you take because the weather is bad can have consequences when the sun is shining and you want to go on that longer activity.
  • Have you been feeling tired, empty or just worn out? Chances are that you are overtraining. Do you suffer from little niggles or higher than normal heart rate? Chances are that you are undertraining.
  • Have you got an event or weekly kilometre average you want to train for? Did you know you can use this ratio to train your body to be able to handle the required work load and prevent injuries. This ratio works for all levels of fitness, it is a principle that applies to everyone from beginners to ultra athletes.
  • Lastly you are probably wondering about the name? Well 5ht is the chemical formula for serotonin the drug we get addicted to with exercise. Train smarter, formulate it!
